Tieing It Up For Make-A-Wish!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASix year old James Funaro, from Nesconset, is raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Suffolk County, NY, Inc. by wearing a tie every day and collecting pledges. He has been wearing a tie for 212 consecutive days and counting. As of May 12th, 2011, he’s halfway to his goal of raising $6000 – an amount that will grant a local child’s wish.

A special acknowledgment was presented to James at the chapter’s recent gala “Bouquet of Wishes”. Please enjoy the following feature!

Newman’s Own Foundation Grant Awarded with the help of Stony Brook Students

SBaward 300x216 Newmans Own Foundation Grant Awarded with the help of Stony Brook StudentsThe Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Suffolk County, NY, Inc. was nominated by and partnered with Stony Brook University’s Alpha Epsilon Delta Health and Pre-Professional Honor Society for a Newman’s Own Foundation grant. As part of the second-annual Newman’s Own Foundation Campus Community Service Challenge, during the America East Conference basketball championship in Hartford, CT, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Suffolk County, NY, Inc. was awarded $7,500.

This grant will help fulfill the wish of Lizbeth, an 11 year-old from Bohemia. Lizbeth enjoys Italian art and culture and wishes to go to Italy this summer.

“A priority of the Foundation is to encourage the practice of philanthropy among younger generations,” said Robert Forrester, president of Newman’s Own Foundation. “The caliber of this year’s student group and nonprofit partnerships is quite extraordinary.  Newman’s Own Foundation is proud to support the work of the  Make-A-Wish Foundation and Stony Brook University’s Alpha Epsilon Delta Health and Pre-Professional Honor Society , who are making a difference on campus and in the community, inspiring more young people to give back.”

Stony Brook University’s Alpha Epsilon Delta Health and Pre-Professional Honor Society/Make-A-Wish Foundation’s application was reviewed and voted on by the Challenge’s Selection Panel.  Leaders in philanthropy and social activism, the judges were:

  • Jonathan Fanton, president emeritus of New School for Social Research and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and current Franklin D. Roosevelt fellow at Hunter College
  • Ben Goldhirsh, CEO and co-founder of GOOD Magazine
  • Rebecca Lobo, basketball analyst for ESPN and former player in the Women’s National Basketball Association


Grant recommendations were based on
Stony Brook University’s Alpha Epsilon Delta Health and Pre-Professional Honor Society’s involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Suffolk County, NY, Inc. , the impact of the partnership on those served by the nonprofit, as well as on the students themselves.

Macy’s Believe Campaign!

This Friday is National Believe Day and we’re celebrating with Macy’s Double Donation Day and Wishes Across America! Macy’s will donate an extra $1 to the Foundation for every letter received on December 9. Just drop off your stamped letters to Santa at any Macy’s special Santa letterbox to help make wishes come true. As part of this special day, more than 50 wishes will be granted at Macy’s locations across the country.
